On July 11, 2014 Whistler is welcoming spiritual director, Lama Marut, to its beautiful public library. His talk entitled I Am Because You Are: Personal Identity Within Community calls for a revolution in the way we look at our lives, suggesting that through selflessness we’ll find a much greater reward than unbridled egoism.

We are all desperately trying to be somebody, to be special. We collect friends and followers online as symbols of our worth. We hunt fame and visability. But maybe we’ve got it all wrong.

Lama Marut: Buddhist Monk to Professor

Trained extensively in the spiritual traditions of Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, Lama Marut (Brian K. Smith) has lived as a Buddhist monk and inspired students globally through his spiritual teachings over the past 15 years. With a  Ph.D. in Comparative Religion, he taught for more than two decades at both Columbia University and the University of California. Lama Marut is currently the Spiritual Director of eight “Middle Way Centers” located in North America, Australia, and Singapore.

He is the author of the popular and award-winning book, A Spiritual Renegade’s Guide to the Good Life (Beyond Words, 2012) and his new book, Be Nobody (Beyond Words, 2014) . This talk is a follow up to the book, where Marut will give attendees action steps and simple meditations to help them find true fulfillment without the need to run away to a monastery.
